1 Kings 2:1-12

This passage starts off with David’s reign coming to an end and his son Solomon rising up to take his place. David is telling Solomon how to run the kingdom and serve God well. He tells him “So be strong, act like a man, and observe what the Lord your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go and that the Lord may keep his promise to me: ‘If your descendants watch how they live, and if they walk faithfully before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.’” David then goes on to tell Solomon how to deal with many different specific people.

This passage is so important to us because we get to see a beautiful picture of God’s faithfulness to His promises. He basically tells them to be obedient and they will prosper in all they do and wherever they go. They will never fail to a have a successor on the throne of Israel. This is HUGE! Not just for them, but for us as well. In Matthew 6:33 Jesus gives us a promise that is very much like the one God gives to the Israelites.

He says “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” It is also written in Philippians 4:19, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” This is just another example of how God stays the same all the time. He promises the same things then as He does now. As long as we obey God and follow Him with our heart He is going to be there with His kingdom, and where His kingdom is there is goodness.

This is not just a promise for things to work out, but it is a call into abundance. God gave you this promise so that we can live freely knowing that God has everything under control. When we live believing this, like actually believing this with your heart, then we don't have to be fearful or anxious for the future. You can live in more freedom each day knowing that God is close and when something doesn’t go as you had it planned it is because God has something better.

Prayer

God, thank you for your promises. Thank you that you are a personal God who knows our hearts and wants us to live in abundance. I thank you that you stay the same always, so we don't ever have to doubt your promises. Thank you for having it all together so that I can live more freely not having to worry about the future. Increase my faith and help me to truly believe in the promises you give me. Help me to put my faith fully in your plan and not my own.
